The growing emphasis on human comfort and environmental sustainability is gradually changing how urban planning is approached.
Cities are increasingly transitioning towards the pedestrianisation of public spaces, encouraging a social shift towards walking and cycling, as slower modes of transport enhance the vibrancy and liveability of cities.
To support these evolving practices, Cariboni developed BLOS, a solution designed to enhance urban spaces by providing visual comfort for pedestrians and cyclists while also safeguarding nature from the adverse effects of light pollution.
Meeting the transition to Pedestrianisation.
Traditionally, outdoor lighting, and street lighting in particular, has typically been designed with car users in mind. Non-motorised users, however, having very different lighting needs due to the differences in travelling speeds, visibility requirements and viewing directions.
The issue still requires more investigation, so Cariboni commissioned new studies regarding the definition and measurement of glare for non-motorised users. This research was carried out in collaboration with the Energy Department of the Turin Polytechnic.
The results obtained have enabled an innovative optical system to be developed that avoids both disability glare and discomfort glare for non-motorised users.
Light where it matters. Darkness where it doesn’t.
The BLOS optics have been designed to enlarge the emitting surface, shield the individual light sources and distribute illumination precisely – keeping critical upper angles dark.
BLOS with Dynamic White LightÂ
By integrating Dynamic White Light technology with BLOS optics, light colour and intensity can be softened to mitigate the effects of artificial lighting at night on the environment and the perception of a space can be altered.
